Barcamp Derry

BarCamp Derry is a free, user-generated unconference for anyone interested in web stuff, technology or digital media

Saturday, October 10th 2009
University of Ulster, Magee

The University of Ulster have kindly agreed to provide free wifi to attendees of BarCamp Derry.

Wifi is accessed by a code and login details, so if you would like to have access to free wifi on the day we need you to fill in a few details in advance.

We’ll be sending off the list to the university on Friday, October 2nd around lunchtime - so please make sure you’ve filled in your details before then. As always if you have any questions, please feel free to drop us an email.

What talks, demos or workshops would you like to see at BarCamp Derry?

At the time of writing we’ve got 18 speakers lined up for BarCamp - covering everything from social media to raising money for your big idea and .net development to building a business in the free economy.

Of course, none of this is set in stone - and we can accommodate 30+ speakers on the day.

Talks and workshops are agreed on the day and based largely on what everyone would like to hear, learn and talk about. But it’s good to get the debate flowing before hand and let people do a little prep if need be.

  • So what would you like to see discussed?
  • What technologies would you like to see demonstrated?
  • What would you like to learn?
  • Who would you like to hear from?

Pop your suggestions into the comments below or send them via Twitter and we’ll add them as we go.

Updates:

  • Brian Cleland suggested via Twitter: “a demo/discussion of google wave would be good”

With well over half the registered attendees (so far) coming from outside of Derrywe thought it would be a good idea to get on the case of some (inexpensive) accommodation.

A few phone calls and some pleading later and we’ve got 2 cool accommodation deals set up for our travelling BarCampers.

DaVincis Hotel -

DaVincis Hotel (map) is about a 10-15 walk from Magee (one straight line), has plenty of car parking space and is attached to a great bar. If you book by phone (028 7127 9111) and mention ‘barcamp derry’ you’ll get 10% off.

Apartotel Derry -

You can actually see the university from The Apartotel (map) so it couldn’t be better situated. They have 21 serviced, one and two bedroom  apartments and have done us a cracking deal.

  • One bedroom apartment: £50 per night (usually £80)
  • Two bedroom apartment:  £80 per night (usually £110)
  • Penthouse: £90 per night (usually £120)

You can book by phoning on (00 44) 2871 271 574 or preferrably by email to dawn[at]alwynlong.co.uk quoting ‘barcamp derry’. Obviously booking sooner rather than later is a good idea - with only 21 apartments to go ’round, they’ll fill up quick.

Waterfoot Hotel

logoAnd the newly refurbished Waterfoot Hotel have rooms from £54 B&B (double) and £47 single. Not bad - and v. classy.

Whichever you go for, we’re planning a few sociables for the Friday evening and some more activities for the Sunday. At £100, you might as well make a weekend of it.

Any questions, drop us a line.

After a great first day of registrations, the ‘to do’ list just keeps getting longer.

Even though BarCamp Derry is still two months down the road, we’re putting out the call for volunteers to help organise the event in advance and help out on the day.

Here are a few things we need

  • Bodies - People who can help out with setting up, registrations and such at the event.
  • Places to stay - We’re expecting a good turnout from across the country. If you have a spare bedroom (or even a couch) that you can offer up, let us know.
  • Technical folk - To help with AV equipment.
  • A Funky Graphic Artist - To design some posters and flyers (festival style - send a link to your portfolio).
  • Printer - Someone to print up said funky posters and flyers - ideally for free
  • Transport - Looking for ways to make the trip up to Derry easier for all you ‘out-of-towners’.

The great news is that we’ve already had some brilliant offers of support and sponsorship. We’ll be unveiling more of the sponsors as we go but in particular, a big thanks to everyone who’s offered to help, has helped already or wants to help now.

If you can help out with any of the stuff above - or anything else - please leave your details in the comments below or get in touch by email.
